Unit 3 Vocabulary

1.IMPERATIVE (adj.)
extremely important or urgent; needing to be done or given attention immediately
[+ that] The president said it was imperative that the release of all hostages be secured.
[+ to infinitive] It's imperative to act now before the problem gets really serious.


2.TEXTURE (n.)
[C or U] the quality of something that can be decided by touch; the degree to which something is rough or smooth, or soft or hard
a smooth/rough/coarse texture
This artificial fabric has the texture of silk.
[U] the character of a piece of writing or music
The writing has a rich texture.

3.CRUCIAL (adj.)
extremely important or necessary
a crucial decision/question
Her work has been crucial to the project's success.
[+ that ] It is crucial that the problem is tackled immediately.

4.UNRULY (adj.) 
Unruly people are difficult to control and often don't obey rules
an unruly class of adolescents
Unruly hair is difficult to keep tidy, often sticking up or out
an unruly mop of black hair

5.SPIRITED (v.)
in the mood mentioned
low-spirited (= sad)
The children are rather high-spirited (= excited and happy)
6.EXHILARATION  (n.)
excitement and happiness
7.ENCLOSURES  (v.)

[C] an area surrounded by fences or walls
the members' enclosure
[C or U] when people put fences around land
An early example of privatization was the enclosure of public land for use by wealthy landlords.
8.FIDGET (v.)
to make continuous small movements which annoy other people
Children can't sit still for long without fidgeting.
Stop fidgeting about!
 
 
9.IMPARTING (v.)
to communicate information to someone
to impart the bad news
I was rather quiet as I didn't feel I had much wisdom to impart on the subject.
to give something a particular feeling, quality or taste
Preservatives can impart colour and flavour to a product.
 
 
 
10.IMPLORE (n.)
[T + to infinitive] to ask someone to do or not do something in a very sincere, emotional and determined way
She implored her parents not to send her away to school.
[T] literary to ask for something in a sincere and emotional way
She clasped her hands, and glancing upward, seemed to implore divine assistance.
